Volunteer Position Description
POSITION:
In-House Volunteer
PURPOSE:
To help with providing our families with a pleasant and comfortable stay by assisting the staff with the day-to-day operations of the House and by providing a supportive presence to guests as needed.
OVERVIEW:
In-House volunteers are vital to the organization in order to maintain a high level of service to the families. Not only do volunteers provide the necessary coverage to staff the House, volunteers also assist in the administrative and operational needs of the origination. Flexibility and dependability are essential to meet the needs of an ever-changing group of people and administrative requirements. Initiative must be exercised to handle a variety of situations. In addition, the volunteers provide a caring and sensitive environment for families in an unfamiliar city.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Consistently and punctually report for appointed shift.
- Be a helpful and understanding listener (not counselor) to House guests.
- Provide general assistance to House guests as needed.
- Make families feel at home and comfortable during their stay.
- Answer and/or direct all incoming telephone calls and assist visitors.
- Take referrals from families, hospitals and social workers.
- Fill open rooms on a priority basis.
- Perform guest check-ins, orientations and check-outs.
- Conduct tours for families, individuals and groups.
- Uphold all House policies and enforce them when necessary.
- Collect and accurately record donations as they arrive.
- Perform daily House operations tasks as requested by the staff.
- Circulate through the House to identify potential problems that might need staff attention.
- Generally assist staff as needed with special projects.
- Assist with fundraising and promotional events when able.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Able to deal with the public in a helpful and supportive manner.
- Willing to share time, skills and interests.
- Must be enthusiastic and willing to work.
- Able to work effectively with other volunteers and staff.
- Show responsibility to uphold all House policies.
- Possess qualities of friendliness, dependability and flexibility.
- Demonstrate respectfulness for confidentiality.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- Minimum six-month volunteer commitment to shift.
- 3-hour shift, either weekly or bi-weekly.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must be at least 14 years of age.
- Submit an application to the Volunteer Coordinator.
- Attend an orientation/training session with Volunteer Coordinator.
